Eighth Night: That’s Life

“I hate life.” Allen groaned as he slammed his head on his desk. Lenalee looked to the white-haired boy and rolled her eyes at his antics.
“Okay, what about it do you hate?”
“Lavi and Kanda for starters.”
“Understandable. And what’s your other reason?”
“I realize none of my friends that I know of are technically human?” He looked up when he got a laugh for his response. “LENALEE!”
“I’m sorry!” The Chinese girl managed to get out between giggles. “It’s just that I know I should feel at least a little offended, but the way you said it with a perfectly straight face? It’s pretty funny.”
“I guess this is what happens when you’re brought up by a clown, and then a bastard.”
“Maybe. But I was brought up by Komui…at least from my preteen years to currently.”
“That reminds me…does Komui know?”
Lenalee’s eyes softened as she nodded, her attention seeming to drift elsewhere. “Yeah…he was there when I came back…to be honest, I’m glad he was at the time. I think I would’ve panicked otherwise.”
“That wouldn’t be the reason behind his constant spaz attacks when boys get near you…is it?”
“Let’s…leave that one for another day…” The female sighed. “Like really, don’t ask, okay?”
“But I already…”
“Dropping the subject, Allen.”
“Okay, okay, it’s dropped!” Allen quickly amended, realizing the potential danger to his life of his best friend. “So…how did you find about them then?”
“You mean Kanda, Lavi, and Robin?”
“Who else is there we both unfortunately know?” Silver eyes looked pointedly to amethyst with an emotion that could only be semi-annoyance.
“Well…I guess those whom visited the afterlife briefly are able to just…tell. You know the murder incidents that were going on for months on the News?”
“Vaguely.”
“Watch the news more, Allen. You might learn of things everyone else normally misses.” She chastised. “Well, those killings were done by a type of undead as well.”
“Undead? Hey, are you sure you guys aren’t vampires?”
“Allen, vampires can’t go out in broad daylight.”
“…you say it like they really do exist in the world.”
“Because they do. However, there aren’t any where there are Grim Reapers. At least…there shouldn’t be.”
“Shouldn’t be?”
“The recent attacks…you remember those, right?”
“Where they found me when I found the bodies?” Allen asked, shuddering at the memory of what he discovered. “Why do I have the rotten luck?”
“Because misfortune likes you?” Lenalee suggested, before becoming serious once more, “But yes, exactly like those bodies you came across.”
“Wait…are you telling me…those weren’t a Grim Reaper’s doing?”
“No. Although they left The Mark, it was their blood and life that was gone. That, Allen, was actually the work of vampires.”

Lying in his bed, Allen stared at the ceiling of his room, noting the cracks and dings in the drywall material. Just what was going on with his life now? If misfortune loved him, as Lenalee had said, then what did that make despair and hopelessness? His mistresses? The boy shuddered at the thought, before sighing.
Not even a full week ago, he had been living a normal life, going to school, hanging out with friends, studying for entrance exams, all that and more. How easily that was thrown away when Lavi and Kanda entered his life.
This had only brought on another thought to the high school student: In what world would someone fall for anyone else, let alone two people within a month? Neither really tried anything just yet, though the game had only been set only three days ago now. Feeling frustrations getting the better of him, the white-haired boy sat up, and removed himself from his bed before pulling on his boots and walked out his bedroom door.
Perhaps…a walk might help clear his head. Just as he reached the door leaving the apartment, he was stopped by the oh-too-familiar masculine voice that had long ago become the bane of his existence. “Where do you think you’re going, you foolish brat?”
Allen need not turn around to know the man behind him was Cross of all people. “I’m going for a walk. Last I checked, Master, it is a free country.”
A rustle of fabric indicated to the teen that his legal guardian had shifted in his movement, the footsteps that followed stopped when they were exactly behind him…and a large pad of papers were hanging in front of his face. “Well, shit ain’t free. Pay these off while you’re out, and maybe I’ll let you sleep in your bed tonight.”
The younger male visibly paled when he saw the wad bills in front of his face. Quickly grabbing it, he examined in a flash, already feeling like his lunch was about to make a second appearance. “How…how in the hell do you spend that much in only a day?!” This time he turned to elder pure disbelief on his face.
Allen was met with a shit-eating grin and a single eye that was all but hiding its amusement. “Now, do you really want to know?”
“N-no…” Allen admitted, feeling deflated. “You’re a jerk.”
“And you’re an ungrateful brat who doesn’t appreciate what I do for you. Now, get out, before I reintroduce you to Mr. Mallet.” Knowing that what his master said wasn’t an empty threat, Allen took no time in fleeing from the elder man’s presence.
As he got farther away, the boy slowed down to catch his breath, the cold winter air showing puffs of his breath in doing so. “I guess some things will never change either way.” He sighed, looking once again at the wad in his clenched fist. “Looks like I’m gonna have to go to a few places to pay all this crap off…now, to find some unknowing saps…”
Summary: Night after night, couples are found dead. The mark of the Grim Reaper carved into their chests. When Allen Walker gets pulled into a world that thought was only legend, will he find a way to escape? Or will a force he can't describe keep him around a bit?
